Quick answer: most Western New York homes need air duct cleaning every 3 to 5 years. Homes built before 1960, homes with pets or smokers, and homes that have been remodeled should be on a 2-to-3-year cycle. WNY Air Duct Cleaning charges a flat $299 for an average single-family home. Why WNY is different from the national guidance
National advice assumes an average heating season. Ours is not average. A furnace in Buffalo, Batavia or Rochester can cycle from early October into May. That is seven or eight months of pulling household dust through the return and pushing it back out the supplies. Homes also stay sealed through that window, so there is almost no fresh-air exchange to dilute what is circulating.
What older housing adds
A large share of the housing across Erie, Genesee and Monroe counties predates 1960. Many of those homes have original sheet-metal systems, often converted from gravity or coal furnaces, with unsealed joints and long basement runs. Debris has had 60 to 100 years to accumulate. When we open a return plenum in one of these homes, what comes out is rarely last year's dust.
Things that shorten the interval
Pets — especially multiple pets or long-haired breeds. Smokers in the house. Anyone with asthma or seasonal allergies. Any renovation in the last two years, particularly drywall work or floor refinishing. A wood stove or fireplace in regular use. A finished basement with the air handler in it. Homes bordering farmland, gravel roads or active construction.
Things that lengthen it
A newer tight home with a good filter changed on schedule, no pets and no smokers can comfortably go five years. Filter changes matter more than most homeowners think: a cheap filter left in for a year lets fine particulate straight through into the system.
Signs you should not wait for the calendar
Dust reappearing on register grilles within days of cleaning them. A musty or burnt smell when the heat first runs. Visible debris inside a register when you look in with a flashlight. Uneven airflow room to room. Black streaking on walls or ceilings above supply vents. Allergy symptoms that get worse indoors in winter.
What it costs to stay on schedule
Flat $299 for an average single-family home with one HVAC system — every supply and return vent, the blower compartment and the return plenum, with before-and-after photos and a written estimate before work begins. Across a five-year cycle that is about $60 a year. It is the most affordable whole-house duct cleaning in Western New York, at roughly half the $500 to $700 regional average.
